Boro Asha Kore – May You Please Accept Me

Somewhere in the early 90s … my first year of graduation … I was sitting alone on a bench in the university. New to the campus, I was very nervous it being one of the most notorious universities. Suddenly, a sweet girl with beautiful hair, naughty eyes, looking like a Bengali, came and sat next to me. In a sweet voice, she made friends with me in two seconds and my relief was beyond words.

Soon, we got chatting and met our families and got to know that our parents knew each other as they were long lost classmates too. And so started my first exposure to Bangla and I fell in love with the language. She taught me one and all. Thereafter her grandmother whom we called “AMMA”, one of the sweetest persons I’ve ever met, started making me sing also. And we started singing for her so often.

Today, I’m flooded with all those memories … of Allahabad’s Colonelganj … jalebi … samosa … Lalla ki chungi … SNH … Maine Pyar Kiya … QSQT … the moped rides early morning … hahahaaaahhhaaa … early morning’s fruit n nut … the narrow lanes … rickshaws in Katra … the paan marks on clothes …going round and round on Univ road hahahahahahahahaaaa …

THE GOLDEN YEARS … BRINGS A SMILEEEEE!

And then she taught me Rabindra Sangeet; and the most melodious song “boro asha” which goes like -

Boro Asha Kore Eshechigo Kache Deke laow

Firayo Na Jononi

Boro Asha Kore Eshechigo Kache Deke laow

Firayo Na Jononi

Boro Asha Kore Eshechigo Kache Deke laow

~

Dino hiney Keho Chahe Na, Tumi Tare Rakhibe Jani Go

Dino hiney Keho Chahe Na, Tumi Tare Rakhibe Jani Go

Boro Asha Kore Eshechigo Kache Deke laow

Firayo Na Jononi

Boro Asha Kore Eshechigo Kache Deke laow

~

Aar Ami Je Kichu Chahi Ne, Chorono Toley Boshay Thakibo

Aar Ami Je Kichu Chahi Ne, Jononi Bole Shudhu Dakibo

Tumi Na Rakhile Griho Aar Paibo Kotha, Kede Kede Kotha Bairabo

Oi Je He Ri Tomosho Ghono Ghora Gohono Rojoni

Boro Asha Kore Eshechigo Kache Deke laow

Firayo Na Jononi

Boro Asha Kore Eshechigo Kache Deke laow

Firayo Na Jononi

Boro Asha Kore Eshechigo Kache Deke laow

For those who may not understand Bengali, here is a translation of ‘boro asha’ -

May you please accept me as I have come to you with great hope. My mother, please do not turn me away. One may not accept who are fallen or sad. However, I know you will welcome me with open arms. I know you will embrace me and give me my place in your heart. What else I look for. May I be given a place to be at your feet and worship you and be allowed to call you my mother! Which other place may I go to find my home? Who will accept me? It is here at your place that is my abode mother. I do not want to be hurt or cry mother. Where will I wander forever crying! The dense darkness is here. The night is deep and dark. I want to be at your feet. Let me call you my mother.

This is for you SAGORIKA BAGCHI …

So nice to go through this article. I too have roamed around Katra area n had Lalla’s chaat……. & the Allahabad Univ days. I feel great recalling all those here now. I too was carried to two decades back. Nostalgic moments these especially because of the way you put it. Thanks for sharing so nicely.
