Paints Versus Prints

As I remember the old, today

Must I SALUTE the new, also

I noticed a new trend coming back again… so must I write about it, as I liked it very much. In the older times, Hindi movies had painted posters and today, I was pretty surprised to see the same back in 2012.

Two new movies which have not been released yet — Ishqzade and Rowdy Rathore have painted posters. Though I know these may be computer-generated, but still… I so liked them.

So here they are. Have a look:

Come to think of it — there must have been a full industry of people making posters and I sometimes wonder what did the painters do after the computer machines took over with force. They would be then using huge paper sheets, canvas and loads of paints, sketches… few weeks or maybe months in advance, before a movie release. So many workers would have been there… working only for this purpose, which actually is the most important thing for the promotion of a movie as it’s the first impression which drives one to the theatres.

They must be hand painted… later printed… and then stuck up on walls and bill boards well in advance.

Add to this the boys who would carry-paste posters all night ferrying oversize ladders and heavy buckets containing the locally made gum.

Was M.F.Hussain also a product of the poster generation, painting from Delhi’s Chandni Chowk!

I have always loved all the old Hindi movie posters with their distorted faces and imaginative geometrical angles. Maybe because of this liking only, I’ve referred them … like Bobby and Guide … in my earlier posts.

The Eastman colour in the old movies was portrayed in those posters too. The bold messages written on them would be so fascinating.

A good friend of mine Dinesh Shankar Shailendra (Director) informed me today that these posters were of different sizes then. The small ones were called single sheeters which were made for the lampposts. The biggest were called Six sheeters which were made for the billboards. They were six sheets painted separately and then stuck together to make the whole banner for the hoarding. He also told me a very interesting fact that from the time Kala Bazaar was made till very recently, the main bill board on Juhu Beach was reserved for Dev Anand’s NavKetan Films banner. Their poster would be put up at Juhu Beach first then distributed all over.

I wonder many a times where these posters are, as of now. They must be all rolled up and dumped in some godown somewhere — forgotten, unseen and unwanted by anyone anymore. Once the movie is removed from the cinema halls and new movies come up… new posters are flagged and old one are thrown to rot away in some corner and removed / torn apart mercilessly… so many efforts and dreams crushed under debris stacked away for years to come.

Ever since the computer age has come, all these workforce and resources must have been out of demand and out of job too. A whole industry must have come to a stand still and so many rendered jobless, helpless.

Bollywood being the largest movie making industry has given work, homes, food and fodder to many a millions. Some of these poster artists must have made big and some must have changed their line of work. Many of these posters I have spotted in many a restaurants, hotels and some homes too, in recent times.

Well as they say that the ‘Old has to make way for the new’ such has been the ways of the world. So the new takes over and the old resides in some corner or some archives.

Here are few of them for you to refresh your memory ——-

Are You A Hindu? My Religion Is Vedic

IT IS SAID THAT TOO MUCH KNOWLEDGE IS NOT GOOD

Long back I had read a book called Roots. It was a story of a man who finds out how his family was picked up from the tribal areas of Africa like animals and forced into slavery for the whites. The idea was not to make a judgment on certain people but to know the truth. Finally, at the end it’s always knowing about the truth and what is most important is accepting it.

Since birth I was put in a category of people called Hindu. The irony is that even the meaning of the word was not known to me. Today it’s known, but there is no going back to the records… and as I got to know… I share here with you.

The word Hindu in Persian literature Hindu-e-Falak means “the black of the sky and Saturn.”

A Persian dictionary titled Lughet-e-Kishwari, published in Lucknow in 1964, gives the meaning of Hindu as ‘chor (thief), dakoo (dacoit), raahzan (waylayer) and ghulam (slave)’. Yet, according to another dictionary, named Urdu-Feroze-ul-Laghat – Part 1 (p 615), the meaning of the word Hindu is as under ——- in Turkish: chor, raahzan and lutera (looter). In Persian: ghulam (slave), barda (obedient servant), sia faam (black color) and kaalaa (black).

Hinduism is derived from the word Hindu, the names of the other three religions… Buddhism, Jainism and Sikhism founded on the Indian subcontinent are derived from Indian words with noble meanings: “Budh” (enlightenment), “Jan” [victorious (over vices)] and “Sikh” (learner), respectively.

Does it make any sense for Indians who are never tired of talking about the glory of their past, their religion and their civilization to call themselves “Hindus” when this word is not found in any Hindu text?

The foreigners gave this derogatory label “Hindu” to the people of the Indian subcontinent. What right or justification do the champions of “Hindutva” have, to apply this derogatory label “Hindu” to others, Sikhs, Jains and Buddhists?

Just for record, I asked my mother: “If you knew this, why did you allow my name to come under such a name for records?”

“Well,” she very conveniently replied, “I always say my religion is vedic.”

& Something DEEP inside was SINGING

As it starts — Hun huna hun huna hun hun huna… and I am held captive, mesmerised.

SHE — In a simple cotton saree, red bindi, sindoor, white and red bangles, hair tied in a plait…

HE — Not so handsome, tall, well-built, beard, naughty smile…

Together… they sizzle…singing: Sometimes Bitter ~ Sometimes Honey ~ Sometimes Soft ~ Sometimes Hard… Gosh!!! I recall this song from Hindi film ‘Yuva’ (2004) – originally titled ‘Howrah Bridge’ just when it’s the day when I had met my man – 15 years ago. This song – a Mani Ratnam-A.R.Rahman’s magic creation – has supersonic effect on me.

Watch it to believe how dance dances, more so….when it’s the love dance. Let all look at you… you just dance… with the moon and the stars being the witness… as your pleasant fragrance flows… enjoy… and you don’t have to be a trained dancer to perform… enough hints… now just dance and play… Hun huna hun huna hun hun huna…

Kabhi Neem Neem
Kabhi Shahad Shahad
Kabhi Naram Naram
Kabhi Sakht Sakht

Mora Piya ~ O My Love

Nazron Ke Teer
Mai Basa Hai Pyar
Jab Bhi Chala Hai Wo Dil Ke Paar

Lajja Se Mare Re Ye Jiya

Boiraagi Man Tera Hai Sahibji
Mere Seene Mein Hai Quaid Who Ab Jee
Preet Ki Raakhon Laaj Aye Mere Rabji
Ruswa Huyi To
Duniya Hasi To

Lajja Se Mare Re Ye Jiya

Shondha Ki Ye Laali
Mukh Chamkaye
Sondhi Sondhi Khushboo
Man Behkaye
Zulfon Ki Raina Phir Kyun Na Chaaye
Chaand Sitarey
Dhekhenge Saarey
Lajja Se Mare Re Ye Jiya……

Piya…..aaaaaaa………..

NIRVANA — BEYOND & BACK

By Ashish Kaul

THE date today is not important…

…What is important today is we have today to live

Ashish Kaul

Across the road I went to pick up ice-cream cups for my grandmother. While paying the change, a small boy with covered head and bleeding lips came over to the ice-cream counter. He was accompanied by an intuitively helpless father.

“What is wrong with his health?” I inquired. “He has brain tumor,” he said, while happily offering his son the ice-cream of his choice.

And the little child (apparently 8 years of age) was more than happy to collect his gift. I was told he could not be operated upon, as the tumor was at a difficult position. Hence he had only few months to live.

This passage is not for me, as what I have learned today… It’s for the father and for the son who have lived today.

———————————————————————————————————————————————

Across the memory bylanes, what I recollect has always been a source of high motivation value to me. Memories are a part of life for an individual.

Some are fond memories, while some are very fond. However, I would like to evaluate the period when one tends to reach an age or a situation when a person is unable to recollect one’s fond past. With no memories to recollect, it would be very difficult for an individual to live.

However people do live in old age. With symptoms of Alzheimer’s and various other medical names. How do they go through the journey of life without remembering or recollecting their far or immediate past…!!!

Do they reach a kind of vacuum where nothing matters at all. Or do they reach a spiritual high, where needs are not important any more. As written in the Vedas for certain cultural cults: “I am your everything“. Where the Supreme suggests that he is your father…brother…air…fire…ultimately do not feel confused if you leave them as supreme is within one self.

I would be very interested to find out that stage where desires are no longer in existence and needs are not important. What goes beyond that is something I would like to find out. However it might be beyond a life cycle to achieve such a level of existence.

People of various cultures talk of such a level of nirvana. However, my interest is not in achieving nirvana but to know about the other side of the nirvana tunnel and be able to come back to my side of the tunnel, and live a normal life with fond memories.

A Cause They Choose To Serve

EVERY FACE HAS  A STORY TO SAY

What does this picture say………!!!!

Today I’ll be short and to the point. I went to this hospital and saw this view. This is the waiting area at All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), popularly known as ‘Medical’ in the Indian capital city New Delhi.

I was aghast when I stood there trying to push and walk ahead with a patient on a stretcher through this human sea. It was a horrendous view and I had to swim through this to a room at the other far away end.

Oh Gosh…….!!!!!! How terribly horrifying it was…………!

Then I somehow managed with some help and did manage to reach after a struggle ……. a few screams…. few abuses by others…..many a million pushes… a few smiles (by me obvoiusly) ….a few thank yous too (yes little kindness is still alive) …..!!!!

I was feeling partially disgusted and partially sympathetic towards those who were waiting for their turn…….Thank God or maybe I should thank the hospital for the fully working strong air conditioners.

All these people had been waiting for hours and did not know how long would they be waiting….some faces were gloomy…some hungry…some ill..some in pain…some had anger…some were cursing the system…some were sleeping…some consoling others…some serving…some somber..some crying….some just plain and simply bored..wow. Every face had a story to say only I did not have the time to read and the patience too (as I was at an edge trying to push my way through all of them) with kindness.

And when I finally arrived at the doctors chamber, I took a deep breath…………!!!

The first question I asked the doctor was — “How do you manage so many patients, so much chaos and yet how you smile?”

What the doctor said changed my whole perspective……!!!!

The Doctor said, “I have chosen to do this and I serve.” That was astounding. I somehow never saw from that point of view as I was so obsessed with my own discomfort that I could not see what they were going through.

And I came out and passed through the same sea of humans and read the stories all their faces were trying to tell me with a smile on my face and compassion in my heart and the desire to alleviate their suffering.

Is there anything we can do to serve? Do we have the passion and the energy to do what so many others who serve do? Though we have compassion and desire in our hearts but is that enough? Do we have the stamina, the will and the strength?

Many a people do as I saw the other day and have been seeing. Maybe one day my name will also flash in that list of ordinary people who become extraordinary by their deeds.

I dedicate this to their extraordinary vision which takes our country places and makes them worthwhile.
