Nawab came to our neighbourhood many years ago. Slightly built, balding and in a lungi. He had lugged a bag full of equipment to the shade of a twisted berry tree near the milk booth and set up shop there. In the 1990s, when I joined a Calcutta newspaper as a rookie sub-editor, he was there plying his trade – as the local cobbler.
