Holidays & Horrors

What's On Your Mind When It Comoes To Your New Year Resolution?Ahh… who doesn’t face this horror every year every time when the holidays arrive! The biggest question is – What to do? I take a deep breath and dread the question, rising up as the holidays approach.

Well, we all face this every year as the schools close for summers or winter holidays. The worst are summer hols as the temperatures rise so high that you just run out of things to do.

When the one and a half month long holidays begin, the kids start hounding the parents. The same questions – where we are going, what we are doing, Mom… Dad… we’re so bored!

Does this happen to you too?

Yeah, same story in every home. Out of forced compulsion, we plan a 10-day trip to a hill station which eventually we do enjoy. Then we spend a week in the malls shopping through our pockets making a big hole in them. The holiday homework consumes the rest of the days and yet at the end you’ll get to hear, “Oh! How bored we were!”

This year maybe we can do something different which just might help us groom our children a little more. In case your kids are teenagers, let them make a trip of their own… just kids to a safe place you know or you can arrange for some adventure camps and trekking or mountaineering expeditions for them and their friends.

In case they are small and not to be left alone, you can arrange for some sleepovers, pool parties, slumber parties, parties in the park etc. Also put some efforts and spend some quality time with your children. Talk to them as to what they would like to become when they grow up, check out their interests and groom them a bit in those fields.

Travel footloose with shoes on dashboardLet me explain – Say they want to become actors/models, then you can get them into acting classes. Let them join some theatre groups and explore their talents. Along with this you can also ask some of your friends working in corporates to organise some summer workshops for the children. It’ll be a good exposure as they would discover how the world functions.

They could also join some hobby classes of their choice and later on you can arrange for them to start their own classes for other children. This way they will also earn some money and learn through a healthy process.

Whatever you might choose, do not cancel that trip to the hill station and all the movies and shopping in the malls. Hopefully they will not end up saying they were bored. Let’s hope for the best. Do come back after the holidays and let me know what all you did this summer!

Happy Holidays Friends.

Dreams – Good, Bad & Ugly

DreamsWhy do we dream? A question we all ask and find weird answers everywhere? My question is different.

A strange thing happened today. I had a dream, as you would have understood by now, as weird as it could be. I have nightmares too many a times… I see many a bad things, many a good things… but I strangely experienced something different.

When I woke up I had a question hanging on my mind. The thing is… in my dreams also, I was tormented by the same inhibitions and fears that I have in reality.

Would you believe if I said it was a happy dream! A lot of happiness flowed in the dream but my fears held me back from totally drowning in the sea of joy I saw. I was doing all that I love, in my dream. As it’s a dream, my mind and heart should have been free but strangely it was directed in the same manner that I live daily.

Why in my dreams I could not throw all the baggage I carry and dream in abandon? After all it is said that what you cannot do in reality happens in your dreams. Doesn’t it? Then why does it not happen to me! Is it only me or is it the same for all of us? Does everyone carry fears small or big, in their dreams?

We all have dreams, sometimes nightmares, we all see people who are dead, we dream about impossible things which we would not be able to do otherwise, we all have orgasms too in our dreams – a phenomenon which happens with all of us but then why do our fears hold us even in our dreams.

Our dreams, some say, are actually reflections of our real lives, some we remember and some we forget and I add that very conveniently you are woken up just when you start having fun. Stupid dumb brain.

Strangely the moment or act which you are forbidden in reality is not possible in your dreams too.

You see that awesome moment… when you are about to kiss someone in your dreams, all flushed up, you come up a little closer… warm gooey feeling creeps up in your heart, you hold hands, smile, look into the eyes bend lower….

BANG!!!!!!!!! You wake up!!!

Does it happen to you too!!!

Most Trusted Brands In Indian Homes

They come with quality and reassurance. That is why they are seen everywhere in our houses. Each such brand has thus over a long time become a name and a well known name. Look around in your house – from salt to soap, from honey to balm, they are all branded. The richer and higher the society the bigger and famous the brand.

But there are some brands which are used all over by all – be it a king or a pauper. Well a few examples I state below; actually when I started writing I was surprised just how many I could come up with for their familiarity and bonding with all types of consumers.

In the modern times, who hasn’t held a Nokia phone till date or demanded ‘surf’ for any detergent or eaten ‘Maggi’ for a quicky or asked for ‘GoodKnight’ for mosquito repellants? Then you may not be bathing with ‘Lux’, but which famous star hasn’t endorsed it! Tell me a household – be it one of the richest Indians Mukesh Ambani’s 22-storey house in Mumbai or an overlooking chawl in the background or a village in India’s north, south, east or west – where you don’t find ‘Dettol’, ‘Britannia’ or ‘Lifebuoy’? And hasn’t every child been given/desired ‘Bata’ sandals/shoes and a ‘Parle’ product while going to school for the first time?

Here, we aren’t discussing No.1 brands or product positions in the minds of the Indians. Else we’ll end up discussing ‘Amul’ and the likes. See, brands such as ‘Tata Salt’ (positioned as ‘desh ka namak’) and ‘Surf’ are used by almost all households in all socio-economic classes. There are so many others like ‘Vicks’, ‘Vaseline’, ‘Vim’, ‘Rin’, ‘The Times of India’, ‘Hindustan Times’, ‘Colgate’, ‘Parachute Coconut Hair Oil’, ‘Pepsi’, ‘Coke’, ‘Glucon-D’, ‘Bournvita’, ‘Horlicks’, ‘Tata Tea’, ‘Fevicol’, ‘State Bank of India’, ‘Iodex’, ‘LIC’, ‘Dabur’, ‘Cadbury’, ‘Crocin’, and ‘Zandu Balm’ to name a few.

The list goes on but the truth is that despite the disparity of the income slots and different lifestyles, all these brands have managed to infest all the households from the rich to the middle class to the poor. Now, the question is how? Is it just by sheer publicity or do they travel from generations to generations and home to home as they are favourites? How strong and long-lasting have their publicity campaigns been all these years, as they still stand strong and have a monopoly in their sectors. Or is it the durability of the products, maybe the good ad affordable price range?

Don’t you think of Vicks Vaporub when you have cold and does anything else stand even close by! Just last night I bought a brand new bottle of a pain killer ointment and yes… all I could think of was Zandu Balm. When I opened this box of Zandu, I saw a brand new bottle. I was ecstatic to see a nice round green and white bottle. It brought a smile to my face as I rubbed it on my forehead.

May be it is the comfort level and the memories we share with these brands that we keep them for generations and never let them go… By the way, “Did you Cherry Blossom your shoes today?” Also, can you tell where ‘Binaca’, ‘Moti’ and ‘Dalda’ have gone? And has ‘Lays’ actually replaced ‘Uncle Chips’ from our homes?

The research is still on! Till then you may write down your favourite brand that is part of you, always.

Star Trek Into Darkness – Movie Review

Star Trek Into Darkness Poster

Taking on a new enemy who’s threatening the galaxy with mass destruction

Star Trek the magnum opus is back in action again and how! Director J.J.Abrams did bring the magic back on the big screen after 2009 and this time it is in 3D.  ’Star Trek Into Darkness’ released on 10th May, 2013 did not see many housefulls on the opening night but as the weekend went by, the crowd pulled in.

The story begins with a chase in dense orange forests with a plunge into the deep sea and a bubbling volcano ready to explode. The Starship Enterprise breaks all rules and saves the planet and the tribes living on it. The same fear of the death of Spock (Zachary Quinto) surfaces this time.

As the Enterprise approaches home, an internal sabotage destroys and damages the HQ resulting in personal losses. Captain James Kirk (Chris Pine) the Commander of the Starship Enterprise is held responsible. To take revenge and to save the world, he goes to the ever forbidden planets and risks lives of his crew along with his own.

The new enemy ‘Khan’ who rises against the Enterprise is mighty impressive, played by Benedict Cumberbatch. He wins accolades, he who fights the Vulcans 300 years ago rises again and unites with the Star fleet leaders in the battle of the superior species.

Spectacularly humourous is Scotty (Simon Pegg) who takes the cake with his expert timing and his cute pet. The others as in Dr. Bones, Lt. Uhura, Mr. Sulu, Chekhov the engineer, Admiral Marcus and his daughter Clara Marcus, all bring significant twists and turns in the story.

For the first time in years, Capt. Kirk and Mr. Spock resolve some issues between themselves and save each other’s skin on and off. Uhura is still Spock’s girlfriend and the new entry Clara, the Admiral’s daughter, is added as a family member to the Starship Enterprise.

As they explore new horizons together and fight new dangers, the adventure continues with 3D skills galore.

Director:  J.J. Abrams [I've come to love it by working on it.Genre: Sci-Fi | Action Writers: Roberto Orci, Alex Kurtzman, Damon Lindelof Starring: Chris Pine, Zachary Quinto, Zoe Saldana, Benedict Cumberbatch, Karl Urban, John Cho, Alice Eve, Bruce Greenwood, Simon Pegg, Peter Weller, Anton Yelchin.

Sexuality, True Hero, Dreams & Sweet Pickle

Bombay Talkies

The general trend everywhere is to see the bad and ignore the good. The same happens in our movies. Recently released on 3rd of May 2013 was ‘Bombay Talkies’, a movie with a message many did not bother seeing but criticized for being lame and not a powerful tribute to 100 years of Indian cinema. The four short stories with nothing in common and no big cast left a good message which I wonder if anyone registered. Let me explain -

Bombay TalkiesThe first story by Karan Johar dealt with confused sexuality issues. This idea discussed sex boldly and portrayed just how to be bold enough to discover the true nature of your sexuality, which the modern generation is facing everyday.

The second story by Dibakar Banerjee takes us to the city of dreams and failures – Mumbai. Inspite of the pressures from the family, society and his dead parents, the protagonist emerges as a true hero in the realms of his own walls he created over the time and becomes a real life hero for his family.

The third story by Zoya Akhtar, deals with an issue everyone tends to ignore. It is true as she shows us how the dreams of the children are ignored and they are forced to do what their parents want them to. Just how beautifully the sheer belief of the child rises beyond all odds against him.

The last story by Anurag Kashyap is about bringing the wish of a dying father based on some true lies in reality. The hardships the son faces for so many days just to get a few minutes from his father’s favourite celebrity to eat half a piece of a sweet lemon pickle. It is so amazing and heart touching which had moments when you wished you could go there and help him – situations you feel sad for a God damned half a piece of a sweet lemon pickle.

In totality ‘Bombay Talkies’ teaches you how to deal with all hardships in life with a smile and a belief that you can do it …and all that people could crib about is if it does justice to 100 years of Indian cinema!

Rise people above criticism and see the good.

I fell in love with Indian literature when I first read Jhumpa Lahiri's collection of short stories, Interpreter of Maladies. It was then that I got obsessed with Indian--and South Asian--literature in general. Soon, I found myself immersed in the works of other Indian writers like Thrity Umrigar, Chitra Banerjee Divakaruni, Chetan Bhagat, and Raj Kamal Jha…

How nostalgia connects humans!

After a fine evening with friends, I said my adieus and sat in my car. She stood next to me waving and making promises to meet up next time. I played my stereo and tuned a song for her. She looked at me and the transformation was to die for.

A grandmother she is but looked 16 only; she shook her head and shoulders with the beat and snapped her fingers, twirled her toes and sang along. A glow on her face and a beaming smile which told me that I took her back a few decades down the memory lane as she connected to the music. She looked so happy and lost maybe just for a few seconds.  Ahhh pure nostalgia!

Sometimes I feel like a loner as I live in my own world with thoughts racing through my mind, some happy some sad and some confused. There are times I share with no one and I’m sure we all do that and that is the time we look back. As we travel in our memories we have some smiles stored, some tears cornered, some pains untouched, some lessons learned; some moments we treasure, some people we miss and some love we still crave for.

Actually what touches all is nostalgia – the times which we have left behind. These days  I’m meeting a lot of new people and making some good friends and would you believe I’m connecting with them only because we share similar memories, and how we smile! Sometimes we may not know each other well but we pour our hearts out and share some awesome moments together.

Isn’t this strange! How gooey and mushy nostalgia can make you and sometimes tears roll down, just as we remember good old days…!!!

Those who have happy memories are truly blessed. Create some happiness in you today so that you can smile when you look back, tomorrow.

Aashiqui 2 – Is love just enough?

The camera pans the screaming audience and stops at Rahul Jaykar with the guitar in his hand and his voice reverberates in the stadium. He sings ‘Sun raha hai tu, Ro raha hun main,’ and wins so many hearts in the opening shot itself. Yes it is the long awaited super-hyped ‘Aashiqui 2′. Released on the 26th of April in Indian cinema halls, it sure did gather a lot of curiosity. In all these weeks as the trailers were out and the music released, two songs made it really large.

Despite all the talk around, many have liked the movie. Things would have been different if it had to only fulfil large expectations of the original ‘Aashiqui’ (1990). The huge task of coming up to the mark has marred the movie though.

Directed by Mohit Suri, the story revolves around singer Rahul Jaykar or RJ (Aditya Roy Kapur) who is at the peak of his career but is not able to handle the fame and so he drowns into alcohol. This young beautiful girl Aarohi Keshav Shirke (Shraddha Kapoor) comes accidently into his life and he falls in love and takes a vow to make her a big singing star. Well, he succeeds in doing so but realizes that he has actually lost himself somewhere in the process. RJ gets into brawls and fights everywhere he goes and thereby loses on work. Aarohi climbs the ladder of success but is not very happy about it as he gets left behind. How they both let love take them over then shapes the story.

The music is fresh though not lived up to the comparison of the original ‘Aashiqui’ which had superb love-mad scores. A good love story with weak reasoning and logic puzzles the audience.

The lead actor Aditya Roy Kapur has truly made some good impressions as he carries the movie on his shoulders completely. A fresh look with a drop of make-up and a dazzling smile with some good scenes takes  Shraddha Kapoor, who is Shakti Kapoor’s daughter, to a different level from the movies she has done earlier. Do they together ignite the screen? Watch and share.

The movie lacks a strong story line but the locations and music build up for the loss somewhat.
