Many a lingering first timers which are embedded in our memories
One fine spring afternoon we were told to come up with some memories from the past and I was utterly surprised by what everyone came up with. It was so amazing that I had to write about it………..
There are so many times we meet people in life at all ages who are destined to walk with us for some fleeting moments but those memories stay on forever. There are some memories maybe your first kiss………. your first touch……your first motorcycle ride….. your first smoke….drink….so many firsts……..which linger on forever and bring a smile whenever we think of them.
THIS IS WHAT EVERYONE CAME UP WITH, THEN ———————-
Sun was setting on the other side of the river Frazer in Richmond and we were sitting on the dyke wondering who will initiate the conversation after a silence of almost 20 minutes broken spottily by useless niceties. Both of us were finding words to express each other’s feelings. Me, with a long face looking far into the horizon and she looking nowhere with misty eyes. I remember we never met without a hug first and words later in past two years but today we were strangely careful not to accidentally touch each other. River Frazer was calm but the storm that we had in our hearts was trying to find a vent lest something unexpected happens. Far away a couple was lying on the dyke and their laughter reached us intermittently. We both stole looks at them occasionally while their music player was playing songs randomly. Then this song started and it happened, the floodgates of her eyes opened and I hugged her reassuringly so tight that I feared that I will suffocate her.

A song I have always loved. I loved it even more when I danced with my girlfriend for the first time. We had gone for a drink at the bar in the hotel where a live band was performing and they played this song ! I requested her whether I could have the pleasure of a dance to this song, to which she happily agreed! I whispered every word of this song into her ear and held her as close as possible and was in a totally different world. I loved the fragrance of her perfume and the touch of her cheek on mine. I know, I lived a lifetime, in those precious minutes!!!

The most amazing friendship that happened on a flight……….. We did not know each other …. he smiled and flirted like anything…. I secretly enjoyed …. and then we got talking…….rather pouring our hearts as if we knew each other since ages like long lost friends….. neither of us wanted the flight to end……. but we knew that it would and it did………. we walked the tarmac hand in hand ……..and then he sang……… YOU ARE BEAUTIFUL………….and I’m still singing .

There was glint in her eyes – twinkling; and she also had the best glassy teeth – all gleaming. We would sit together, it being mandatory to pair a boy and a girl at the school desk. We would even learn English together during silence periods, when the teacher-designate would not be there. I would then watch her lips – pink – speak when she would turn pages of ‘Spell Well’ (the English learning book). We would go out in recess, together and would also return home together, hand in hand. During games, we would be three – with her twin-brother joining us, and we would make such great friends. At such a tender age, she would make me dreamy – such was her beauty. Maybe she was destined to come so early into my life, walk few miles and then go very far. I am happy she at least ensured the honeydew for me, to prize her all my life. Thank you, Honey.

Canada, Vancouver, Richmond, Near Fraser River – Staff quarter of Queen’s Memorial Hospital in 1988. That was my second visit abroad after training in UK for one year. Spending 4 years in Vancouver brought me in contact with many persons – a special person too who was a lawyer. I used to walk those days and coincidentally she used to pass by in the evening the same day same tine. We used to wave each other out of courtesy. After almost 20 days she stopped by me while I was walking and asked me if I wanted a lift. I gladly accepted the offer. She knew about me she said since she used to see me in the hospital premises from her office in the next block. Slowly and unknowingly I don’t know when I started caring for her and her response was more bolder and affectionate than me (My poor Indian shy genes). Feel a bit ashamed to say but one day SHE proposed me. she had a sister who was married to an Indian. They called me for the dinner one day in a hotel – strangely named “Tajmahal”. I never knew that the parents had only two daughters and the elder was already married to an Indian. While we talked he asked me about my visa and I told them that I had six months more then I will get a PR as I have been promised. After dinner, the girl stopped looking at me on the street and never talked to me. After so many years I don’t know what the brother-in-law told her and the family that they behaved in such a rude manner. Anyway despite my PR getting approved and being the only son of my parents I was called back home. Lot of water has gone under the bridge but I could never know what happened that day that changed my life since that was the FIRST time ever some girl proposed me. Well, it takes all kinds to make the world.
